Proposed solution & project value (Level 2)

Level 2 RCAs capture two things beyond the investigation: a proposed solution summary and a project value statement. Both are part of a complete L2 analysis before you submit it for review.

The Level 2 order

In a Level 2 RCA, these steps happen in order:

1. Identify the root cause (in the investigation).
2. Write the proposed solution summary.
3. Add corrective action items — these become available only after the proposed solution is summarized.

So in L2 you summarize the solution before you can list corrective actions.

Proposed solution summary

Write a short proposed solution summary — a description of how you'll address the root cause the 5-Why chain identified.

1. In the investigation, open the proposed solution section.
2. Select Write a summary and describe the proposed solution.

Once the summary is saved, the corrective actions section opens up.

Project value

The project value statement records the business value of the RCA. You open Add a statement and answer a short set of questions about the value the project produces:

Question	What to answer
When Action Items are implemented, can any "Value" be declared?	Yes or No — whether the project produces a declarable value.
What type of "Value" does this Project produce?	The value type (for example, Downtime Avoidance).
Has the "Value Statement", "Dollar Amount", and "Hours Amount" been determined and entered into the Reliability Scoreboard Project List?	Yes or No.
If a Cost Savings / Avoidance is declared, has a Cost Savings Form been submitted internally and to the Customer?	Yes or No.

What's next

• Add corrective action items (now available after the proposed solution).
• Submit the RCA for review once the root cause, proposed solution, project value, at least one corrective action, and a supporting document are all in place.

Troubleshooting

Problem	What to do
The corrective actions section is greyed out	In Level 2, corrective actions become available only after the proposed solution has been summarized. Write the summary first.
You can't submit for review	Submitting needs the root cause identified and summarized, a proposed solution, at least one corrective action, and at least one document.
