Roles & permissions

What you can do in the RCA app depends on your role. This page explains the roles, the approver positions that drive the approval chain, and the difference between a role and being the owner of a particular RCA.

The roles

Every user is invited with one of these roles:

RoleWhat it's for
AdministratorFull access. Manages users, clients, and sites, and can act on any RCA — including reopen, validate, and cancel.
ApproverReviews and signs off RCAs as part of the approval chain, according to their position (see below).
ContributorCreates and works on RCAs and action items.
ViewerRead-only access — can browse RCAs but not change them.

Anyone signed in can view RCAs; the role determines what they can do beyond that.

Approver positions and the approval chain

An Approver is also given a position, and the positions define the order of the Formal Approval chain for a Level 2 RCA. They approve in this fixed order:

  1. Reliability Planning Analyst
  2. Reliability Engineer
  3. Site Supervisor
  4. Site Manager
  5. Area Program Manager

Each approver acts in turn — an RCA reaches the next approver only after the previous one approves. Which approvers are available for an RCA comes from the site's team assignment.

Role vs. owner

Owner is not a role — it's a per-RCA assignment. When an RCA is created, someone is named its RCA owner, and the owner has extra rights on that RCA:

  • Edit the RCA and its investigation.
  • Complete it, resolve rejection comments, resubmit it, and approve or reject its action items.

So a Contributor who owns an RCA can do everything on their RCA, while an administrator can do those things on any RCA. In general, an RCA can be edited by its owner, the people assigned to it, or an administrator.
